Shining Night, the award-winning documentary by Michael Stillwater, celebrates the life and music of America’s most frequently performed choral composer, Morten Lauridsen, and the artist whom musicologist Nick Strimple has called “the only American composer in history who can be called a mystic.” Exploring the relationship of art, nature, and spirituality, Shining Night reveals the composer through the lens of his love for the natural world together with his passion for music and literature. The documentary conveys the richness and breadth of the award-winning composer’s life, with a soundtrack featuring his masterworks – Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium, Nocturnes (Sa Nuit D’Ete, Soneto de la Noche, and Sure On This Shining Night), Dirait-On and Madrigali.
This film is a presentation by Phoenix Chorale & Scottsdale Musical Arts, in association with No Festival Required. The event is co-sponsored by Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and hosted by KBAQ 89.5 FM’s Sterling Beeaff. Doors open at 7 pm; a special guided tour of SMoCA with Assistant Curator Claire Carter begins at 6:30 pm and is included.
