A renowned poet; a visionary Hollywood composer; two award-winning choirs, a ground-breaking musical quartet, and…
This season, we are happy to welcome new singers to the Chorale. To get acquainted with our new friends, we’re going to feature each of them right here on ChoirTap this season.
Christopher Herrera is the newest addition to our BASS section and today happens to be his birthday. Happy Birthday Christopher!
When or how did you start singing? In 7th grade I was enrolled against my will in my junior high school choir. Apparently they were in dire need of male singers. I was awful; I couldn’t match pitch to save my life! Two years later, I sang my first solo. Since then, I’ve never looked back.
What excites you most about singing in the Phoenix Chorale? I think what excites me most is how singing with this ensemble has challenged my voice, my ears, and my brain in ways far different from the opera singing I’ve been doing for 14 years. Being a soloist is one of the best feelings. However, singing with a group of soloists with a common artistic goal is absolutely special.
What was the first concert you attended? It was in high school. My friends and I went to see the TLC concert at Magic Mountain in Los Angeles.
What is your favorite musical memory? My favorite musical memory would definitely have to be traveling with my undergraduate choir to the 2003 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, a competition held in Wales and broadcast on the BBC. We ended up winning the top prize and were named the “Choir of the World!” It was such a dedicated and talented group of singers, so it was so awesome to see all of that hard work rewarded.
What is your musical guilty pleasure? 90’s gangster rap. It doesn’t get anymore opposite from classical music than that!
What talent would you most like to have? Circular breathing. Some of the phrases we sing in Phoenix Chorale can be deadly on one’s breath support.
Favorite flavor of ice cream? Cookie dough all the way!
If a movie was made about your life, what actor/actress would play you? I’m going with Meryl Streep because I think she can pull off anything! She’s fantastic!
Imagine you are stranded on a deserted island for all of eternity and you can bring 5 movies with you—what 5 movies would you bring?
- Road Trip
- Django Unchained
- Pitch Perfect
- Inglorious Basterds
- All the Star Wars movies (they go together, can’t pick just one!)
If you were an animal, what animal would you be? I’d be either of my dogs. They have a sweet life.
