IMG_20140907_221643(Phoenix, AZ) – The Grammy Award-winning Phoenix Chorale opens their 2014/15 Season with “Requiem: Day of the Dead” on November 1 & 2. In several religious traditions around the world, the first days of November are celebrated as All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day, and they are familiar in Mexico and the American Southwest as Dia de Muertos or “Day of the Dead.” We’re honoring this weekend of observances through Requiem settings by two choral masters: Herbert Howells and Maurice Duruflé. Kansas City organist Jan Kraybill will be our featured guest performer and we’ll also pay tribute to Dr. Harvey K. Smith, beloved conductor of the Phoenix Boys Choir, with a world premiere written by J.A.C. Redford.

“Harvey Smith was a passionate man that endeavored to fill the world with music,” said Charles Bruffy, Artistic Director of the Phoenix Chorale. “For almost 40 years, the work he did with the Phoenix Boys Choir gave the gift of music to many boys, and taught them valuable life lessons that transcend music. He is missed and will never be forgotten by all the many lives he touched throughout his life.” Dr. Smith passed away in 2012 and a new work by J.A.C. Redford was commissioned by his wife, Dr. Dorothy Lincoln Smith to celebrate her husband’s memory.

We’ll spend the evening remembering our loved ones through songs of transcendence, inspiration and uplift. The Howells Requiem examines the pain of loss, deep grief, and eternal hope; Duruflé wrote his Requiem for choir and organ in memory of his father. In the Chorale’s 57-year history, the Duruflé Requiem has only been performed once in 1999. This is the first time the Chorale will sing the Howells Requiem.

The Phoenix Boys Choir was founded in 1947 and from 1960 – 1999, Dr. Harvey K. Smith was their conductor and artistic director. He was vital to the creation, shaping and success of the organization. Dr. Smith not only taught generations of boys the art of singing, but he also helped them grow into confident young men through lessons of leadership, character building, discipline and global awareness.

ABOUT THE MUSIC – A requiem or a requiem mass, also known as Mass of the dead, is rooted in the Catholic church. Taking from the Latin noun requies, meaning rest or repose, requiems are intended to peacefully lay to rest the souls of the deceased. Originally liturgical texts were meant to be performed through chant but composers began to bring text to life through music in unique ways.

Requiem by Herbert Howells – Herbert Howells was born in England in 1892. The British composer wrote many pieces of music for organ and orchestra. Hymnus Paradisi was written in 1938 after the death of his infant son. Much of Hymnus Paradisi comes from Requiem (1936) and wasn’t released for publication until 1980. The Requiem is a grand composition that does not follow the traditional structure of a requiem mass service using devotional psalms & scriptural passages from both Catholic and Anglican liturgies of the dead, rather than traditional liturgical texts for a latin Requiem. There are only six movements which are performed in both Latin and English and set for a cappella choir:

  1. Salvator Mundi (o saviour of the world)
  2. Psalm 32 (the lord is my shepard)
  3. Requiem aeternam (1)
  4. Psalm 121 (I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills)
  5. Requiem aeternam (2)
  6. I heard a voice from heaven

Requiem by Maurice Duruflé  –  Maurice Duruflé was born in France in 1902 and was a well-known organist. Published in 1947, his Requiem has been recorded and performed countless times since its release. Requiem encompases eight movements surrounding the loss of his father and the grief and despair that followed his passing. Duruflé built his composition on Gregorian chant structure; entirely in Latin, the composition follows the traditional mass with nine movements pertaining to the texts and procession of a traditional mass:

  2. Kyrie
  3. Offertorium (Domine Jesu Christe)
  4. Sanctus
  5. Pie Jesus
  6. Agnus Die
  7. Lux Aeterna
  8. Libera Me
  9. In Paradisum

He That Will Learn to Pray, Let Him Go to the Sea by J.A.C. Reford – J.A.C. Redford is a prolific composer, arranger, orchestrator and conductor of concert, chamber, and choral music, film, television and theater scores, and music for recordings. He That Will Learn to Pray, Let Him Go to the Sea uses texts from George Herbert and various psalms. The composition was Commissioned for Charles Bruffy and the Phoenix Chorale by Dorothy Lincoln-Smith in memory of Dr. Harvey K. Smith, beloved conductor of the Phoenix Boys Choir.

About Jan Kraybill : Renowned organist, Jan Kraybill currently serves as the Principal Organist for the Dome and Spire Organ Foundation, an affiliate of the international headquarters of Community of Christ in Independence, Missouri. She regularly plays and oversees the care of the three largest pipe organs in the Kansas City metro area:  the Community of Christ Auditorium’s 113-rank Aeolian-Skinner (installed in 1959) the Temple’s 102-rank Casavant (1993), and the 102-rank Julia Irene Kauffman Casavant (2012) at the Kauffman Center’s Helzberg Hall, where she serves as Organ Conservator.

Dr. Kraybill and volunteer staff organists provide music for worship services and present free organ demonstration recitals at the Auditorium and Temple.  Jan also co-coordinates the church’s Dome and Spire concert series, leads international hymn festivals, teaches workshops, and is a resource person for the denomination’s musicians. 

Jan has a piano performance and education degrees from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, and a doctorate in organ performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance.
